A little local history

Cavtat stands on the site of the Greek and later Roman settlement of Epidaurum, an important coastal town whose remains lie partly beneath the modern one and partly underwater. After Epidaurum was destroyed in the early medieval period, many of its inhabitants are said to have moved north to found what became Dubrovnik.
