Korčula town is a walled peninsula of stone streets laid out in a herringbone pattern, and it faces the Pelješac channel across a narrow strait. From here the small islands of the Korčula archipelago, the beaches of the south coast and the wine villages of Pelješac are all within short runs.

A little local history
Korčula was settled by Greeks and later Romans, but its present form comes from the Venetian centuries, when the walled town, the cathedral of St Mark and the stone houses were built and shipbuilding and stone-cutting were the main trades. The island claims a connection to Marco Polo, and the sword dance known as the Moreška has been performed here for centuries.
