Why explore Split by boat?

Split is the largest city on the Croatian coast and the busiest departure point in central Dalmatia. Boats leave the city's bays for Brač, Šolta and Hvar, and the Blue Lagoon near Drvenik Veliki is one of the most popular swimming stops in the country. With an airport, ferries and a large charter fleet close by, Split suits everything from a two-hour cruise past the Marjan cliffs to a full day of island hopping.

A little local history

The Roman emperor Diocletian built his retirement palace here around AD 300, and when nearby Salona was abandoned its residents moved inside the palace walls — the city has been inhabited continuously ever since. Medieval Split grew within and around those walls, spent centuries under Venetian rule, and later passed to Austria.
