A little local history
Greek settlers founded Pharos, today's Stari Grad, in the 4th century BC, and the agricultural plain they divided into plots is still worked along those ancient lines. Venetian rule made Hvar town an important naval stop on the route down the Adriatic, funding the fortress above the harbour and the arsenal on the waterfront, which housed one of Europe's oldest municipal theatres.
