Zadar is one of the Adriatic's oldest coastal cities and an ideal starting point for exploring northern Dalmatia by boat. From the historic peninsula, boaters can quickly reach quiet bays, small island villages and some of Croatia's most spectacular island scenery. A little local history
Zadar began as the settlement of the Liburnians and became the Roman colony of Iadera, whose forum still lies open in the middle of the old town — its stone was reused to build the 9th-century church of St Donatus. For centuries Zadar was the seat of Venetian Dalmatia, and the city walls and land gate from that period are still standing.
