A little local history
Umag was a Roman settlement and later, for many centuries, part of the Venetian Republic, which left the compact fortified layout of the old town and its remaining walls and towers. Fishing, salt, olives and wine sustained the area, and after Venice fell it passed to Austria and later Italy before becoming part of Croatia.
