A little local history

Opatija was a fishing hamlet around the abbey of St James until the mid-19th century, when the arrival of the railway and the interest of Austro-Hungarian society transformed it into a fashionable health and seaside resort. Villa Angiolina, built in the 1840s, marked the beginning; grand hotels, parks and the promenade followed.
