A little local history
Lošinj grew wealthy in the age of sail: by the 19th century Mali Lošinj had one of the largest merchant fleets in the Adriatic and a shipyard to match, and the captains' houses along the harbour date from that period. When steam replaced sail the island reinvented itself as a health resort, promoted by the Austro-Hungarian authorities for its climate and vegetation — that is when much of the parkland and many of the villas were created.
