Why explore Rijeka by boat?
Rijeka is Croatia's largest port and the gateway to the Kvarner gulf. From here the water opens towards Krk, Cres and the Opatija riviera, with sheltered channels in most directions. It is a working city rather than a resort, which gives boating days from Rijeka a different character — you leave an industrial harbour and are among islands within the hour.

A little local history
Rijeka's harbour has been in use since Roman times, but the modern city is largely a product of the Habsburg era, when it became the Austro-Hungarian Empire's main commercial seaport and the site of major shipbuilding, industry and the first torpedo factory in the world. The 20th century brought contested rule between Italy and Yugoslavia, which left visible layers in the architecture and the city's bilingual heritage.
